ABSTRACT
The Nigerian economy has come a
long way from the colonial times and from the military era. The private sector
is growing to great heights powered by upstream and downstream players in the
oil sector, the banking sector, telecommunications and ICT. The manufacturing
industries are also growing, albeit their major challenge, the poor state of
power supply and distribution in the country.
This growth of the economic
sector and the players therein, with the ever increasing population and buying
power of the Nigerian makes the nation a prime target for the sale of almost
any product or service.
The challenge to the companies in the country
is how to continuously market and advertise their products so as to gain and
hold significant percentages of this large market in whatever field they are
in. Hence, there is a great rush by companies to outdo each other in the advert
spaces of television, radio, print media and bill boards, along with the use of
marketing agents who are often given monthly targets. This rush is not left to
only this means of advertising. The trade fair has become a popular event in
most states of the federation. There are exhibitions in many hotels and halls
around the country. Tradeshows and grand product lunches are also a major
feature in the annual programs of many companies in the country. The science
and technology sector is not left out either, as there is always an exhibition
or scientific demonstration of a discovery or innovation holding in many parts
of the country.
The project aims at providing a
facility to house these activities in a properly designed architectural
environment; one that deals especially with the problem of overcrowding and
circulation at these complexes as can be found all over the world.
The text is compilation of the
research carried out to gather information and knowledge that will aid the
selection and use of architectural solutions to the problems of the development
of such a centre.
Chapter one is a synopsis and an
initial study of the basics of the project and the intentions and elements of
the study. The next chapter is a background study going into the history of
fairs and exhibitions, the history of fair and exhibition complexes all over
the world and then, in Nigeria. It explores the market for fairs and
exhibitions in Abuja and the fairs and exhibitions that already hold in the
city.
Chapter three is case study,
delving into the location study, history, and building study of two local, and
one foreign fair and exhibition complex. The building study is an in-depth
study of the layout, design and functional arrangement of the building, its
service arrangement, structure, methods and materials of construction and
performance in use. The study of each building has a critical appraisal
covering all the issues above.
Chapter four is a study of the
location area for the project and an analysis of the site and its conditions.
It is rounded up with a discussion on the architectural considerations which
will evolve out of the conditions discovered in the site analysis.
There is a discussion on the
methods of planning, financing, construction, management and operation of this
type of project.
The text is rounded up with a
presentation of the architectural solutions which will be presented by the
writer in the design of the building, based on the information and knowledge
gathered from the research used in this compilation.
