INTRODUCTION
Schiff
base is considered as one of the most popular families of organic compounds
which are used as synthetic intermediate as well as quite helpful establishment
of coordination chemistry (Tidwell, et al 2008). Hugo Schiff first synthesised
the base (Schiff, et al 1864). He reported the condensation of primary amines
with compounds. When aldehydes and Ketones react with primary amines, a class
of compound is produced carbon-Nitrogen double bond called imines, or sometimes
Schiff bases.
Reaction
may be brought about by heating a aldehydes and amines in equimolecular.
CH3CH2C=OH+CH3NH2 CH3CH2CH=NCH3+H2O.
Due
to their physico-chemical properties, an important role has been played by
Schiff bases as chelating• ligands for transition metal and for the development
of co-ordination chemistry. Since they have flexible nature and easy proton
donating properties, the study of Schiff bases and their complexes with
transition metals, Lanthanides and radioactive metals have flourished since few
decades. Schiff base ligands show a number of sites for binding that lead to
higher coordination polyhedra and cause greater kinetic and thermodynamic
stability.
