ABSTRACT
This study focused on
the effects of herders-farmers clashes in Nigeria especially on the economic
diversification through agriculture. The clashes are said to be on the increase
recently. There have been several reports at different places concerning these
clashes. The government on its own is trying its best in curtailing the
prevailing situation. The researcher decided to find out how these clashes
affect the diversification of the Nigerian economy through agriculture. The
hypotheses formulated were in conformity with the stated research questions and
they were tested and validated using
Chi-Square statistical tool. This study was conducted using descriptive survey
design and structured questionnaire for the collection of data. The sample size
was 350 and was used for the analysis. Data were analysed using frequency
tables and simple percentages. This research revealed that, Herders-farmers
conflicts are like cankerworms that have eaten deep into the fabrics of our
security of lives and properties. Findings also reveal that the efforts of the
government to achieve rapid economic diversification have been frustrated by
these constant clashes between herders and indigenous farmers. The findings
also show that if nothing is done quickly to checkmate these clashes, it will
lead to scarcity of foods in the nearest future. The government must step up
with the security architecture in our state to broker peace between foreign
herders and indigenous farmers.
