ABSTRACT
This study is focused
on socio-cultural factors militating against domestic violence in Enugu North
local government in Enugu State. The specific objectives were to; determine the
socio-cultural factors that determine domestic violence, assess the role of
cultural practices on domestic violence, ascertain the extent to which societal
beliefs influence domestic violence, examine the role of the community attitude
towards domestic violence. Relevant literatures were reviewed which were in
line with the objectives of the study and research questions. Relevant theories
were also adequately reviewed and the theory of learned helplessness was
adopted to suit the study. Descriptive survey design was adopted. The
population was not constant as the can change with time. The population of the
study area was projected to 2021 using the population projection formula. Taro
Yamane formula was used to determine the sampling size of three hundred and
fifty (350). Questionnaire was used as an instrument for data collection. The
indicated that; socio-cultural factors significantly influence domestic
violence, again cultural practices, societal beliefs and community attitude
significantly influence domestic violence. Based on the findings, the study
made some recommendations; that the Enugu State government should set up
guidance and counseling centers on family matters where Religious Leaders,
elders in the communities and guidance and counseling experts will educate and
counsel partners to live peacefully and arrived at collective decision to
improve family relationship. The study concludes that domestic violence in all
ramifications should be discouraged.
